French Polynesian bishops visit SS.CC. brothers in Hawaii

Archbishop Jean-Pierre Cottanceau, ss.cc. of Papeete (Tahiti) and Bishop Pascal Chang-Soi, ss.cc. of  Taiohae o Tefenuaenata made a fraternal visit with SS.CC. brothers in Hawaii.  The bishops are on their way to Pago Pago, American Samoa for a meeting of CEPAC - the Episcopal Conference of the Pacific - which is the governing body of the Pacific Regional Seminary where  our brothers go to seminary.   Archbishop Jean-Pierre, who ordained Fr. Jeremy Sabugo at St. Ann Church in Kaneohe, O’ahu in 2017, is vice-president of CEPAC.  Bishop Pascal Chang-Soi, ss.cc. has been bishop of the Diocese of Taiohae o Tefenuaenata for fifteen years.  Bishop Pascal, who celebrated his silver Jubilee as a priest, met our SS.CC. community in Hawaii in the early 1990’s when he was studying English.  Fr. Joseph Bukowski, III, ss.cc. and Fr. Joe Popish, ss.cc. have fond memories of Pascal’s visit.

The bishops celebrated masses in French at the St. Patrick’s Monastery chapel, with members of the SS.CC. the local community and a French ambassador.   They also met Mark Jechura, who was visiting at St. Patrick’s as part of his Tree of Hope tour with relics of St. Damien of Moloka’i and St. Marianne Cope.

We had a festive meal at a local Italian restaurant, where we shared laughs and stories of our missionary activity, and enjoyed the delicious food.

Archbishop Jean-Pierre and Bishop Paschal were very gracious, humble and friendly.  Archbishop Jean-Pierre came out for the coffee social at St. Patrick's after the 8 a.m, Sunday mass after I (Bill) invited him to meet a parishioner named Char who has a love of Tahitian culture.   He very kindly and warmly chatted with her about Tahiti over some fresh local donuts.

The French Polynesians had lunch with the bishop of the Caroline Islands, Bishop Julio Angkel today Aug. 4th, on the memorial of St. Jean Vianney.

Prayers for the Bishops at the CEPAC meeting.  We hope to see Archbishop Jean-Pierre and Bishop Paschal again soon.
